New updates for Caveserv

Caveserv is currently undergoing a redesign of the theme. Please bear with me as I work out any kinks in the system.

Processing 1.0 - A Cool Tool for Graphics Nerds

I first learned about Ben Fry from running across his original thesis paper on computation information design.  Apparently, he has done all kinds of additional work on the topic since his PhD thesis, which has led to a very cool new software language, Processing.  This software language is meant to both teach and be used by professionals to create visually more stunning work than can be done with most "out-of-the-box" expensive software solutions, and it's open source!

You can see more of what this cool Processing software is capable of producing by viewing some of the demos on the homepage for the software.

iPod Beanbag Chair

beanbag chair for iPods and cellphonesI have been using a little beanbag chair for my iPod that my company gave out a while back as a bit of promotional swag.  (The image to the right will link you directly to the page for the company that makes them.)  This little simple beanbag works great for a video iPod or iPhone, not just for watching videos, but also for keeping your iPod easily viewable and accessible on your desk at work to listen to your music and podcasts. No more picking up and putting down that iPod or iPhone to fast-forward, rewind, or pause your audio!

Refreshing Look at Interior Design

America has typically been slow to adopt western European fashion and design trends. Searches on western European home and apartment sales and rental sites will show numerous examples of just how more modernized the home interior design has become in Europe versus America. It was therefore quite refreshing to stumble upon an article in the New York Times this morning that talks about a designer in New York City who has begun accenting interiors with dark woodwork over the normal Martha Stewart-y clean white baseboards and cabinetry. Visit any IKEA store and you will see that this is not a particularly new idea in European interior design. (View the "living room inspiration" slides 1, 3, and 14 for good examples of the dark/light contrast being "reversed.")

Poor Statistics Graph Leads to Media Spin

GOOD Magazine provided a chart recently about 'ballooning' debt incurred by graduating college seniors with more than $40,000 in student federal loans. OK, so I can't seem to find where they provide a writeup on any of the content of this chart, but this chart is just terribly done.

First of all, it's way too large to display the whole chart on a typical 17" or 19" monitor, even at a high resolution.
